3 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Chiropractor in Greensburg Pennsylvania

3 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Chiropractor in Greensburg Pennsylvania

When it comes to hiring a plumber, roofer, or even looking for a new doctor I think we can all agree that there are some things that we’d like to know first.  Picking a chiropractor is no different. Like most professionals there are some chiropractors that are very committed to their craft and love seeing their patients improve and there are others that care little for their patients and just want to make money. Armed with the 3 questions that we will now discuss you should have a much easier time sorting out if this chiropractor is one of the good ones or one to steer clear of.

1. Will the doctor use exams to find out where my problems are originating from?

This first question is a simple one and should be followed by any phrase including the words: yes, definitely, of course he or she will, most certainly, etc. Exams are an extremely important way to begin to piece together where your issue could be coming from. They can include things such as range of motion, deep tendon reflexes, orthopedic tests, muscle tests, and even x-rays. If you ask this to a potential chiropractor and they say that they don’t do any exams or do very few exams mark them off of your list and keep looking. Doing multiple exams of several types gives the doctor the best picture of what is truly going on, which in turn gives you the patient the confidence that they can actually help you. Whether that chiropractor has been practicing 40 years or 4 years makes no difference, if they don’t do anything but adjust then you are not going to see results.

2. How long does the average visit take?

The second question is a little more complicated than it sounds. If you are asking about the first visit where the doctor takes a history, does all of his or her exams, and possibly takes x-rays then the answer could fall anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours. This heavily depends on how many problem areas you have. However when we are talking about any visit following the initial one then you’ll want to hear somewhere between the 10-20 minutes range. If they say that their visits are super fast and take less than 5 minutes then you’ll want to ignore these chiropractors. These clinics often have little regard for the patient and just want to get you in and out quickly so that they can see as many patients as possible in any given day. The human nervous system is very complex and you’ll want someone that gives you adequate time so that they can truly get to the bottom of your specific problem. A chiropractor that treats each patient’s issue individually is far better than one that uses cookie-cutter methods that are exactly the same for every patient that comes through his or her door.

3. How many visits will it take to resolve my problem?

The third and final question is perhaps the most important. If you ask this to a chiropractor and they say anything to the tune of 1 visit then you should be extremely suspect of them. As I mentioned earlier the human nervous system is highly complex and takes time to heal that varies greatly depending on the amount of damage that it has sustained. There are seemingly no injuries or problems that can be solved in a single visit, however with that said you can sometimes see a significant decrease in pain or a significant increase in function following a single adjustment. An honest chiropractor will be upfront with you when you ask this question and may even tell you the average length of time that it takes to fully heal based on what he or she has seen with other patients. Don’t get discouraged if they say that it may be a few months, if they were willing to give you an honest answer then give them a try. A standard rule of thumb is that if you aren’t noticing any change at all in 3-4 weeks then it is time for them to try a different approach or it is time to seek out someone new.
